UP9000 4-12-2 Configuration Steam Locomotive

UP-9000 (Union Pacific 4-12-2)


Built: A 4-12-2 configuration loco built by ALCO between 1926 and 1930.

Description: Only used by Union Pacific - hence the name.

Duties:They were designed to increase the speed of freight trains over flat country, and UP ran these locomotives at 50 mph hauling 120 car trains. They proved to have high maintenance costs.

Significant Events:

Retirement: All now retired; however one was restored from scrap and is now on display in L.A. California.
