Built: Construction of Tornado began in 1994 at Darlington Works, England. Completed in 2008, by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust

Description: 4-6-2 Peppercorn class steam locomotive, built on the design of the Peppercorn A2 which were built in 1944/5

Duties: Funding for the build came from hiring out Tornado itself for special rail services. Tornado has been conducting passenger services on the UK rail network and on mainline-connected heritage railways since 2008.

Significant Events: It is the only example of an LNER Peppercorn Class A1 locomotive in existence, all of the original production batch having been scrapped without preservation. The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, a charitable trust was founded in 1990 to build Tornado and possibly further locomotives to preserve the memory of this class. Some advances were made over the original Peppercorn, to bring it into line with modern safety standards.

Retirement: Still in service in May 2015.
