Evening Star


Built: Swindon railway works, 1960.

Description: BR standard 9f with 2-10-0 wheel configuration. Brunswick green livery (normally reserved for passenger locomotives), and a copper-capped double chimney.

Duties: Used over the Western Region and over the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway line. Its main duties were as a heavy freight locomotive but it was also regularly used for special events and exhibitions.

Significant Events: It was the last steam locomotive to be built by British Railways. It holds the distinction of being the only British main line steam locomotive earmarked for preservation from the date of construction. It was the 999th locomotive of the whole British Railways Standard range.

Retirement: Withdrawn from service March 1965, and marked for restoration.
